Bali is small on a map and slow on the road. Where you stay shapes your days more than almost anything else, so it is worth choosing the area before choosing the villa. Here is a quick feel for the four areas guests ask about most.

Seminyak

Seminyak sits on the west coast, a short drive from the airport. It is known for sunsets over the beach, beach clubs, boutiques and a dense choice of restaurants, especially around Petitenget. Villas here tend to be on quiet lanes off the busy streets, so you can walk to dinner and still sleep well.

Good for: first trips, couples and groups who want restaurants and the beach close by.

Canggu

North of Seminyak, Canggu mixes rice fields, surf breaks and a busy café scene. It is popular with remote workers and longer stays, and villas range from compact two-bedroom homes to larger family places with gardens.

Good for: monthly stays, surfers and anyone who likes working from a café in the morning.

Ubud

Ubud is inland, in the hills. Days here are about rice terraces, jungle valleys, temples, yoga and cooler evenings. Villas often look out over greenery rather than the sea.

Good for: slower trips, culture, wellness and a break from the coast.

Uluwatu

On the Bukit peninsula in the south, Uluwatu is all limestone cliffs, surf breaks and white-sand coves reached by steps down the cliff. Distances are bigger, so most guests get around by scooter or driver.

Good for: surfers, sunset views and quieter stays with dramatic scenery.

A few practical notes

  • Traffic adds up. A 10 km trip can take far longer at busy times. Staying near what you plan to do every day saves hours.
  • Rainy season usually runs from around November to March. Showers tend to come in bursts, and villas with covered living areas make the most of it.
  • Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, closes the island for a day each year, including the airport. Check the date if your trip falls in March.
